On the other hand, if the company typically gives amazing reviews, then you will need to assess whether you were the problem or whether your boss has a problem with you. If you were doing your job exactly the way you were asked and people around you all received positive reviews, then it could be that your boss does not like you. If you are certain this is the case, then you should take some sort of action regarding the negative performance review. They are not allowed to give a bad review simply because they do not like someone. In addition, it actually could just be your boss trying to get your attention. If he thinks you are capable of more, he might have thought this would be the way for you to wake up.
The next thing you need to do to deal with a bad performance review is to have each criticism explained fully to you. As an employee, you have a right to know what you are doing wrong. If you get answers that are not clear or your boss tries to dodge explaining them to you, then there is something going on that needs addressing. There is no reason why your boss would not want you to improve. When you are doing this, make sure you are not defensive at all. You need to stay calm because you will have a better chance of learning from your mistakes if you have a clear head.
If you feel the need to have a rebuttal, make sure it is based on facts and not pure emotion. You only will make the situation worse if you get defensive and upset while trying to state your case. However, using facts will allow your boss to see your side of the story better. You cannot simply assume that a bad performance review at your job means you will be fired, so do not get so worked up about it that you make rash decisions.
