How to Handle Performance Reviews

Performance reviews are never fun, but they're necessary. Might as well do them right!
If you have ever been the boss, then you know that employees sometimes have the tendency to blaze their own trails. Some like to do their own thing. On the surface this isn't such a bad thing. They're showing creativity, independence and the opportunity to think for themselves. However, this behavior can lead to employees making up their own unique rules to adhere to - in addition to the company guidelines. That IS a bad thing.

For this reason you'll need performance reviews to help keep everyone in line and on the same page. Look at it this way. Employees are people and as people, they ultimately long for structure and guidance. Performance reviews offer that. They let them know what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong. The reviews show them where they can improve. What are their strong points? The review will tell you!

YOU'VE HEARD A WEAK LINK WILL BREAK A CHAIN. WELL, A WEAK EMPLOYEE MAY JUST BREAK A COMPANY!
Wasted time is just as valuable, if not moreso, than productive time to your business. It makes everything harder on the rest of the team when one player isn't doing his or her fair share. Nobody likes to be the bad guy and call people out on this, but it has to be done or your business may as well be the Titanic and that slacker employee the iceberg.

Review your employees regularly. Make sure they know exactly what the company expects of them and instill in them the desire to expect that greatness from themselves. A well-rounded, happy, always smiling employee makes others around them a little more joyous. It makes them want to be happy, too. And why is this employee so happy? They have a leader (you!) giving them guidance. Through performance reviews you are showing them the right way to be!

LEAD YOUR PEOPLE OUT OF THE WILDERNESS AND INTO THE PROMISED (PRODUCTIVITY) LAND!
Keep the people in line with solid, continued guidance is what they will need in order to grow as employees. Plus, it is what your company requires to grow as a business. You can't have dead weight holding your biz back so you have to keep your people trained and at peak performance. Being that you're the boss (or at least an interested third party) it falls on you to extend your expertise and mentorship to the lacking personnel. It's just good business that way.
