The main lesson I learned initially was the importance of responsibility and awareness in my life. I really took this on board and actually found myself unable to make excuses both to myself and to others. I have also found it has helped in all of my relationships in life. My friends, my family and especially my relationship with my husband.
When I became more aware with how I interact in life, I was able to then take action and responsibility for the way I am and act.
I also started using the coaching in work in relation to the staff I manage. The not starting questions with "How" and "why" made such a difference in answers. Instead of defensive answers and excuses, I was allowing people to go a bit deeper and could see the awareness spark as the answers came out.
I even followed one of the texts in the book when my husband turned to me while driving back to Kilkenny and asked me why was he so stupid to go on a binge drinking session with the lads at the weekend and wanted me to give him a solution as usual. The questioning started and his brain began thinking. He had found his answer and had taken responsibility by the time the journey had ended. He asked me jokingly if he had just been coached and I simply told him that's how I help all my friends and since I started this course, it has become true with great results.
If anything this book has built my confidence with its easy writing skill and made me see you need to take it a step at a time and not stress about it and it will come to you.
I have also taken on board that "we must see people in terms of their future potential, not their past performance". I can be very hard on myself and need to start giving myself a second chance.
The GROW sequence has allowed me to have structure with my dreams and ambitions and break them down so it doesn't seem like a constant struggle but actually easily imaginable steps. The REALITY part was especially important as I have a great way of convincing myself that I have really worked at something when really. I know deep down I've not done a lot.
I hope you enjoy Coaching for Performance as much as I did and hope you enjoy my other book reviews coming soon.
